Acrylic nails are known as artificial nails, artificial tips, artificial acrylic nails, fake nails, fashion nails, nail enhancements or nail extensions.   

Acrylic nails are not a replacement, but are an extension of one's natural nails. There are two basic ways to create acrylic fake nails and that is through tips and forms.  

The most common are acrylic nail tips made of lightweight plastic plates that are shaped like nails. You glue them on the end of the natural nail and then you apply acrylic over the whole nail. 

Forms are fitted over the natural nail and then an acrylic nail is molded.  Then the form is removed and then the nail is shaped and buffed up to a shine. 

There are actually quite a few popular techniques that can be used to make longer, better-looking nail extensions or enhancements. 

Acrylic is the mixture most commonly used. After the mixture is applied it starts to harden in 30-40 seconds and continues to cure to its final hardness usually within 15 minutes or so. Both powder and liquid acrylics can be removed by using certain solvents - acetone is the most c0ommon. It can take 12 to 18 minutes to remove an acrylic nail. The best advice is to always have these nail enhancements taken off in a beauty salon, spa or nail salon by a nail technician. If you try to pull them off yourself you could damage the nail bed. Make sure you go to a salon or spa and have them soaked off in solvent properly by a nail tech.   

MMA (methyl methacrylate) used to be used but now salons no longer use it due to U.S. government regulations -- or shouldn't be anyway. It is very toxic and nail technicians used to wear masks to avoid the toxic fumes.  There were many injuries from the MMA. It was used in the early type of porcelains. 

One nail technician says that to get a fill with acrylic/gel you must use a UV light to do it right. She says there are very few products and no gels,  that can do a good fill with without a UV light. 

A material "UV Top Coat" (which is in correct chemical terms a polymer resin) ( UV gel nails)  hardens under ultraviolet light. It may be more expensive. Depending on the brand you choose these types show more flexibility and strength. They're usually so strong they can't be removed with organic solvents.  The only way to remove them is by filing unless you just let them grow out with the natural nail. 

An alternative to acrylic or gel nails are fiberglass or silk wraps - for silk wrap nails. They are made by cutting pieces of fiberglass or silk fabric to fit on the surface of the nail or tip and then it is sealed down with a resin or glue. If you find you're allergic to acrylic nails or the gels used you may want to consider fiberglass or silk wraps.

Other popular nail materials can be used, as well as combinations of materials. There are also temporary, cheaper flexible nail tips that can be glued on at home and these are usually cheap and easy to apply.

You can learn how to do acrylic nails yourself easily with a little practice however it's always best to get your acrylic nails done in a nail salon, hair salon or spa. These trained nail techs know best how to remove gel nails or acrylic nails also.

Nails techs get the proper licensed cosmetology nail technician training and take acrylic nail courses.
